    Music and magical reflections

… the reflections of a quartz mirror that would be magical because it would retain in its memory whatever was reflected in it…

    Marc Patch
  • With its profound and multifaceted symbolic significance, the theme of the mirror that inspires this programme has not been forgotten by musicians. The mirror has thus endured through the centuries – is this because music is a field where, since time immemorial, the principle of the mirror has been embodied in its very structures?

  • The retrograde motets of Guillaume de Machaut, Bach's crab canons, the rhetorical figures of serial dodecaphonic music, or the evocation of poetic images reflected in music, as here in the work of Marc Patch... the mirror still speaks to today's composers. Thus, this programme takes shape, juxtaposing related works and perhaps drawing us into dreams and the unconscious...
